Cloth Diapering Q&A
Now that you know why cloth is a good alternative here is some information on
the different types of cloth diapers and how they are used.

The diaper products we will be discussing and have knowledge about are:
  • Prefolds
  • Contours
  • Fitteds
  • Pocket
  • AIO (All-in-Ones)
  • Covers
  • Inserts & Doublers

Prefolds - are the most common and most "known" cloth diaper.  They usually
consist of a layered fabric that is folded and then either pinned or held together
with a "Snappi."   Pre-folds MUST have a cover as well. Some consider them
outdated, and others say they are great because they are the most economical.
Most are plain white, but can be hand-dyed to your specifications.  The most
absorbent pre-folds are Indian pre-folds.

Contours - are like pre-folds only they are already shaped and have some type
of liner sewn in.  Usually fastened with diaper pins or snappi's,  They MUST have
a diaper cover as well.

Fitteds  - are a diaper fastened with velcro or snaps sewn on and also has some
type of absorbent material sewn inside.  They are also used with a diaper cover.

Pockets - are diapers that have velcro or snaps and have a "pocket" area where
you insert an absorbent "insert", "Stuff-in", or doubler inside.  The Diaper itself is
waterproof and these do not require a cover.  Pockets are a favorite of Dad's
and/or babysitters!

AIO (All-in-Ones) -  are just what they say All-in-one.  They consist of a diaper
with an absorbent liner sewn inside and have velcro or snaps for closures.  AIO's
are another favorite of Dad's and/or babysitters.

Covers -   are covering for prefolds, countours, and fitteds.   They are made of
waterproof material (PUL), wool, or usually contain one of the two.

Inserts & Doublers - inserts are what is put into a pocket diaper and are usually
made of a material that is not supposed to be right next to baby's skin.  Doublers
are an insert that can be used in any of the diapers above and are usually made
to be near baby's skin.  They "double-up" on absorbency.

I hope this has been a little bit of a help to you on your Cloth Diaper adventures
